Over the summer growingSTEMS hosted STEM in the Park events at a local college during an outdoor concert series. RoboBees students volunteered to help growingSTEMS staff with these events.
WHAT: Held an activity booth each Friday of the River Concert Series as well as demonstrated The Pollinator
WHERE: St. Mary’s College (The River Concert Series [RCS])
WHEN: Fridays in July; 7/1, (7/8 rained out), 7/15, 7/22, 7/29
WHY: To promote STEM in the community and provide fun activities for kids
During the summertime, most people enjoy having fun in the sun. At St. Mary’s College of Southern Maryland, members of FIRST Team 836 set up a Growing STEMS Activity Booth at the annual River Concert Series. Kids of all ages enjoyed the various activities at the booth—including Rock Salt Ice Cream, Gak, and homemade Lava Lamps. In addition, the team’s robot, The Pollinator, was demonstrated. People learned about the ‘bot’s abilities, the FIRST® games, robotics as a whole, and some even chose to drive the robot.
One of the most successful and popular activities was the Gak. Gak—a non-Newtonian liquid—was created using a combination of warm water, glue, food coloring, and Borax. Many of those who made Gak came back to do it again. Some even said they did the activities from our booth at home!
This effort to promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics was highly successful. From toddlers to teenagers, those who attended the booth had a great time.
